Personal Statement

Interestingly, when writing this article to support my application, I found that what I want to introduce about myself could be written down in the following form of Questions and Answers.

Why are you applying for this programme?

During the undergraduate studies from 2009 to 2013, I engaged myself in three industries, finance, applied chemistry, and real estate. Before entering into employment market and becoming a versatile woman like my idol Ms. Wu Yi, I decided to specialize in banking and finance.

My interest in banking and finance was firstly aroused in 2003. In that summer holiday, SARS spread all over China, and I was allowed to go where but stay at home. It was when I watched TV to see how everything outside was going that I began to know Ms. WU Yi and her deeds. Besides fighting against SARS, she strived hard to promote China’s entry into WTO in 2002 and East Asian countries industrial integration in 1995. With all of these endeavors to develop China’s economy, she pointed out that economy is the fundamental of statehood, bank is the main center of economy, and finance the blood. Since then on, when my fellows were still talking about film or singing stars, I had already made up my mind to follow her calling and devoted to these three fields.

However, I chose Applied Chemistry as my undergraduate major rather than finance due to three reasons. The first one was that I intended to study banking and finance in a well-known university, whereas the mark in the 2009 Chinese National College Entrance Examination failed to achieve this. The second was that my parents expected me to major in an engineering subject rather finance. Thus, I chose Applied Chemistry in China University of Geoscience (CUG) which does well in this field. The last was that CUG is located in Wuhan, where the seven 211 universities agreed that their students could study for a minor degree in another university within this group. I could make use of this agreement and intensify my banking and financial knowledge in Wuhan University.

It was lucky that I had and stuck to this clear study plan. Average mark of 84.88% for finance study and 80.84% for applied chemistry (both equal to 2:1 degree) might well demonstrate my academic and research ability to study at the postgraduate level.

What can you contribute to the programme?

Firstly, experience to balance interdisciplinary studies and social practice, which might well improve the future classmates’ comprehensiveness. During the last two and a half years of my undergraduate studies, I had to study two majors in two universities. Furthermore, as founder of CUG Wuhan Cross-university Study Association, I had to arrange and organize activities for the association members or other students voluntarily.

Secondly, witty and resourceful discussions with teachers or international students about professional questions, which will improve classroom interaction and knowledge intake. The scrupulous attitude obtained from the engineering subject of Applied Chemistry at CUG, coupled with logical reasoning from math and eloquence from abundant debate contests, made me accustomed to finding questions to the core, and proposed my own solutions.

Lastly, but also most importantly, an objective analysis to the banking industry and real estate industry in China, which helps the international students understand China better. While studying finance at Wuhan University, I paid more attention to banking studies and found two characteristics of China’s commercial banks. The first one was that as China develops rapidly, the industrial industry and service industry have finished industrial structure upgrading, whereas the commercial banks fail to fulfill their corresponding duties of promoting credit constructions, like credit and risk management. The second was that these commercial banks also fail to satisfactorily support the Three-As in Chinese (peasants, agriculture and rural areas). How to solve this problem is a question I can discuss in the future classes, and it concerns the lives of hundreds of thousands Chinese people.

As for the real estate industry, to which my father has devoted since 2009, I had an intimate experience with it during the summer holiday of 2013, and I also had a deep impression on the development of real estate in China, especially in the second and third tier cities. It’s hard to manipulate the relationship among bank loans, real estate investment, and economic development. But it does have to be dealt with so that inflation can be reduced, and people can lead a better life.

What benefits do you expect to gain from this programme?

On one hand, Islamic Banking has maintained an annual growth rate of about 10% during the past 10 years, but it is not that popular in China Mainland, though Hong Kong already introduced it in 2007. China is now speeding up the process of developing her middle and western regions where there are a large number of Islams. Islam Banks and the policies would undoubtedly be effective for financing and improving these regions’ financial system and the economic developments. How to make use of Islamic Bank would be a topic I am about to learn.

On the other hand, a greater disparity between the rich and the poor arrives as China develops at a faster speed. While upgrading credit system and revising financial derivatives to remain international competitiveness, banks should also be more flexible to the rural areas so that financing could be arranged for these areas’ development. But how to deal with the risk and investment management for the banks themselves is a problem for these commercial banks. It is also another orientation of mine.

What is your career plan?

Following the MSc course, I would like to return to China, become a public servant, and work in the government sector to promote the middle and western areas’ economic development. The intimacy with applied chemistry and real estate would help me revise suitable policies for specific areas, while your MSc programme would help me control money and banks from macro perspective in these developments. I believe that I can be another Ms. WU Yi, and I expect that your university could give me this chance as the solid step to move nearer to this goal.
